## Why Is My Microphone Volume Dropping?
Windows updates frequently reset your system preferences without warning. When this happens, Windows often automatically re-enables a background feature called **"Enable Audio Enhancements."**
While Microsoft designed this feature to help filter out background noise, it often does the exact opposite for professional legal recording, court reporting, and meeting transcription. When it is turned on, the system aggressively suppresses audio. If a speaker leans slightly back from the laptop or desk microphone, their voice can drop off dramatically or disappear from the recording completely.
## Step-by-Step Guide: How to Disable Audio Enhancements
To restore reliable, crisp, and consistent recording quality, you need to uncheck this setting in your Windows audio processing menu. Follow these quick steps to fix it:
1. **Open the Control Panel:** Click your Windows Start menu, search for **Control Panel**, and open it.
2. **Switch Your View:** In the top-right corner of the Control Panel window, change the "View by" dropdown from Category to **Small Icons**.
3. **Open Sound Settings:** Find and click on **Sound**.
4. **Locate Your Microphone:** Navigate to the **Recording** tab at the top of the Sound control panel window. Select the microphone device that you use for recording in SoniClear (this is displayed just below the Record button when you start recording). Then click **Properties**.
5. **Turn Off Enhancements:** Go to the **Advanced** tab in the Properties window. Look for the checkbox labeled **Enable Audio Enhancements**, and **uncheck the box**.
